  • Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
    Building Systems, Construction, and Manufacturing

    Program Highlights

    SJVC's Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC or HVAC-R) program prepares students to work in the heating and cooling industry. Curriculum focuses on theories of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. Students study the operation, maintenance and repair of residential and commercial equipment.

    • Diagnosing mechanical and electrical problems
    • Proper installation, servicing and replacement techniques
    • Credential and Professional Certification

    Graduates can earn a Certificate of Completion in as few as 10 months, or an Associate of Science Degree in as few 14 months.

    Graduates also have the opportunity to earn the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification. Fees associated with this examination are included in tuition for first-time test takers. Payment for retakes or subsequent exams are the responsibility of the graduate. Failure to sit for the exam does not constitute a refund or discount in tuition.

    SJVC’s Business Administration certificate program provides a framework of business knowledge and skills that can adapt to any company’s operation. Students develop into knowledgeable, ethical and technically competent business professionals.

    Our graduates can earn a business administration certificate of completion in approximately 8 months.

  • Criminal Justice: Corrections
    Legal, Law Enforcement, and Emergency Services

    Program Highlights

    SJVC’s Criminal Justice: Corrections program prepares graduates for a career in Corrections. Our program includes instruction in criminal law, evidence collection and preservation, report writing, institutional corrections, physical agility training, defensive tactics and weaponless defense. Many graduates initially find work in security and develop entry-level work experience while they pursue employment as a correctional officer.

    Career Opportunities

    Upon completion of the Corrections program, many graduates first find work in Security, while some graduates go directly to work in Corrections.

    Security and Loss Prevention Officers can expect to:

    • Answer alarms and investigate disturbances
    • Guard premises to prevent theft, violence, and breaking of laws and rules
    • Monitor and authorize entry or exit of visitors, patrons or employees

    Detention and Correctional Officers can expect to:

    • Maintain security in buildings, towers and other areas of an adult correctional facility
    • Intervene during emergencies or altercations within a correctional facility
    • Escort/transport offenders

    Program Outcomes

    Our Criminal Justice: Corrections students can earn an Associate of Science Degree in approximately 14 months.

    Admissions Requirements

    Admission to the Criminal Justice: Corrections program requires:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Passing score in Admissions assessment
    • U.S. Citizenship
    • No felony criminal convictions
    • No misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit applicant from possessing a firearm
    • No legal conditions that would prohibit applicant from possessing a firearm
    • Valid California driver license
    • Applicant must be in good health and physically fit
    • Applicant must be age 18 by program start date

    Enrollment in the Criminal Justice: Corrections program is subject to the approval of the CJC Program Director or their designee.

    Applicants must have reliable plans for transportation, child care and time to devote to academic work outside of scheduled class hours.

  • Medical Assisting
    Medicine and Health Care

    Program Highlights

    SJVC’s Medical Assisting classes prepare graduates to work in medical offices and specialty clinics in as few as 9 months. Training helps students learn the skills required to be a valuable member of the healthcare team.

    SJVC’s Clinical Medical Assisting program is designed to introduce students to the core skills and competencies needed to work as a medical assistant in California. You will graduate with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to provide administrative and/or clinical support in healthcare settings such as medical offices, clinics, and hospitals.

    • Credential and Professional Certifications

    Our Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) students can earn a certificate of completion in approximately 9 months.

    Graduates earn a Certificate of Completion and are eligible to sit for the National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) exam offered by the National Center for Competency Testing.* Students also prepare for and take certification exams within their program courses that include HIPAA and CPR.

    Students residing outside of California are encouraged to take a certification examination recognized by their state medical board or an independent certification organization.

    *Graduates may qualify for other certifications depending upon location and placement requirements

  • Medical Office Administration
    Medicine and Health Care

    Medical secretaries have a range of clerical duties and responsibilities1, including:

    • Maintain medical facility records
    • Enter patient data into computers
    • Process medical billing information and insurance claims
    • Schedule patient procedures or appointments
    • Transcribe dictation
    • Prepare reports or articles for physicians or medical scientists.
    • Arrange for patients to be hospitalized

    SJVC’s Medical Office Administration program is designed to help students develop the actual skills employers are looking for. An externship component exposes students to hands-on, real-world experience under the direction of a medical office manager or director in an actual healthcare setting. Externships allow students to experience what it’s like to be a medical office administrator and learn practical skills in the types of places they may work in after graduation.

  • Pharmacy Technology

    Program Highlights

    SJVC’s Pharmacy Technology program prepares you to work under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist as part of a team responsible for carrying out doctors’ pharmaceutical orders.

    Career Opportunities

    A well-trained pharmacy technician can expect to work in a highly respected, professional environment such as franchise pharmacies, hospitals and home health care agencies.

    On the job, pharmacy technicians can expect to:

    • Mix pharmaceutical preparations according to written prescriptions
    • Add measured drugs or nutrients to IV solutions under sterile conditions
    • Compute charges for medication dispensed to hospital patients
    • Inform supervisors of stock need and shortages

    Program Outcomes

    Our Pharmacy Technology students can earn a certificate of completion in approximately 9 months.

    Students will become eligible to apply for licensure with the California State Board of Pharmacy providing they meet requirements as specified by the board, including a Department of Justice criminal background check and data bank query.

    Students qualify to take the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam upon successful completion of practice examinations administered during their course of study with the approval of the Pharmacy Liaison. Students also have the opportunity to earn their Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Certification.
